My Son Drew a Stranger in My Bathrobe—Then His Teacher Found Proof

Derek asked for equal custody. He had every right to remain Lucas’s father, but Lucas had begun waking at night, afraid he would get someone in trouble if he said what he saw. A court-appointed evaluator spoke with him, Mrs. Gable, and both of us. The final arrangement gave Derek regular parenting time and required us to use a co-parenting app for communication. We also arranged counseling for Lucas.

I never told Lucas that his drawing had exposed anything. I told him grown-ups had made choices, and grown-ups were responsible for what followed.

By winter, Lucas and I were living in a smaller place near his school. The dog took up too much room in the kitchen. My mother still came by on the mornings after my shifts, but she had a key I had given her, and Lucas knew when to expect her.

One afternoon, he brought home another drawing. It showed our apartment, the dog asleep under the table, and me on the sofa with a blanket over my knees. Lucas had drawn himself at the kitchen counter, making toast.

Above us he had written, in careful block letters, MOM IS HOME.

I put it on the refrigerator. When I woke after my next shift, the toast was cold, the dog was snoring, and Lucas was reading beside me. He looked up to see if I had noticed his picture.

“I did,” I told him. “I love it.”

He smiled and went back to his book. I stayed where I was, in my own home, with nothing I needed to pretend not to see.
