I Accidentally Texted the Mafia Boss My Ultrasound—Minutes Later, He Knocked

I looked at the man who, twenty-four hours ago, had thought he could command my life with a snap of his fingers. “No black leather binder tonight?”

Luca reached into his pocket and held out a single folded page signed by his own hand in front of Judge Halstead that afternoon. “It’s an unconditional maternal trust deed. Full medical, educational, and residential authority stays solely in your name, Ellie. I also funded an independent pediatric research chair at St. Jude’s that answers to the academic senate, never to my family’s board, so no one can ever use my name to threaten your career again.”

His dark eyes met mine, stripped of every trace of arrogance, leaving only a fierce, quiet devotion.

“You saved my life twelve weeks ago,” Luca said, his voice low and steady. “And last night, you saved my soul from the vipers in my own house. I don’t want to own you, Ellie. I just want the chance to earn a place at your table—for however long it takes.”

I looked down at the twelve-week ultrasound resting atop my cardiology textbook, then back up at the most dangerous man in the city waiting patiently on my doorstep for my permission.

For the first time since my phone screen had flashed with those two blue check marks, my hands didn’t shake at all. I stepped back from the threshold and opened the door wide.

“Come in, Luca,” I said. “The kettle’s on, and I have an anatomy exam to study for after dinner.”
