They Were Still Having Sex Every Week. Then She Heard What Her Husband Called It.

But the room no longer felt like a stage on which both of them performed reassurance.

Simon said no sometimes. Lena occasionally took a walk afterward or called Marta. She stopped insisting her disappointment vanish before he could trust it.

Lena made invitations without disguising them as jokes or tests. Simon learned that declining one did not relieve him of ever initiating. When he wanted her, he had to risk being clear.

Their marriage did not become effortless. It became more accurate.

One Thursday in November, Lena was reading at the kitchen table while rain clicked against the windows. Simon came in from the living room and stood beside her.

“What?” she asked.

“I want to go upstairs with you.”

She closed her book. “Is that an invitation?”

“Yes.”

“Not an anniversary obligation, emotional first aid, or preventive maintenance?”

He smiled. “None of the above.”

“And if you change your mind?”

“I’ll tell you.”

Lena rose and slid her arms around his neck.

“So will I,” she said.

Upstairs, neither of them hurried. When Simon asked to slow down, Lena heard the request instead of a warning siren. When she asked whether he wanted the lamp left on, he answered without studying her expression first.

“Yes,” he said.

It was not a promise about tomorrow. It did not erase the previous two years or guarantee that fear would never return.

It was only the truth of that moment.

For the first time in a long time, that was enough. Neither of them entered the room ahead of it.
